CLARINET AND ELECTRONICS

“Sumergido” is a four-and-a-half-minute work for solo clarinet and interactive electronics. The piece combines a fixed-media track with live processing controlled by the performer, including effects such as delay. A custom Max/MSP patch manages the electronic environment, playing the fixed-media material and responding to pedal cues from the performer. At the same time, the clarinetist hears both the fixed-media track and a guiding audio track containing beats and tempo cues, allowing the acoustic and electronic elements to remain synchronized throughout the performance. Beneath the surface, where light gradually dissolves into the depths, “Sumergido” invites the listener into a world shaped by movement, pressure, and uncertainty.

The piece portrays a diver caught within powerful ocean currents, drifting between moments of tranquility and turbulence. The clarinet represents the diver's presence within this environment, while the electronics transform and extend its sound, creating an ever-changing sonic landscape that mirrors the restless movement of the sea. The process of writing for interactive electronics presented its own challenges, particularly in coordinating the performer, fixed media, and live processing. At the same time, this experience opened up fascinating possibilities for exploring how technology can expand the expressive capabilities of an acoustic instrument. “Sumergido” became an opportunity to experiment with this relationship and discover new ways of shaping sound beyond the instrument itself.
