TO THINK OF TIME...

Performer Quartet
“To Think of Time…” is a nine-and-a-half-minute experimental work for four performers, featuring an unusual combination of five wine glasses, a small keyboard, the performers’ voices, and fixed-media electronics. The score is organized around five-second measures, creating a flexible rhythmic framework within which specific pitches, vocal material, and textual cues are carefully notated. This structure allows the performers to work within a clearly defined temporal space while maintaining a sense of fluidity throughout the piece.
The work draws inspiration from excerpts of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, responding to his reflections on time, existence, and the human experience. Rather than attempting to directly illustrate the poetry, the music explores its ideas through evolving textures, timbres, and gradually unfolding musical gestures. The interaction between the voices, fragile resonance of the wine glasses, keyboard, and electronics creates an intimate and atmospheric sound world in which the boundaries between spoken text, instrumental sound, and electronic texture begin to blur.
I conceived the piece as an invitation for both performers and listeners to slow down and become aware of the passage of time. While the musical materials remain relatively accessible for the performers, the resulting atmosphere encourages the audience to contemplate the relationship between sound, text, time, and the present moment. “To Think of Time…” is ultimately less about measuring time than about experiencing it.
