AGUA TURBIA

PROJECT

September, 2024

Alto Saxophone, French Horn, and Bassoon Trio

“Agua Turbia” is a six-minute trio for alto saxophone, French horn, and bassoon, centered around two principal motifs that unfold within an octatonic harmonic language. Through imitative counterpoint, the motifs continuously migrate between instruments, transforming in character and function as the piece progresses.

The music follows a character making his way toward a river. He begins in a muddy, unsettled landscape, navigating a path marked by uncertainty and discomfort. Slowly, the river comes into view. Upon reaching it, he stops and becomes immersed in his surroundings—the flowing water, the distant songs of birds, and the wind brushing against his face. For a brief moment, he finds tranquility. Yet, distracted by the beauty around him, he loses his footing and falls once again into the mud. The piece explores this cycle of struggle, progress, and setback as a reflection of experiences we may encounter in our own lives.

Through the character’s journey, I seek to create a sense of empathy and recognition, reminding us that moments of clarity and peace can sometimes be interrupted by the very obstacles we thought we had left behind. I am deeply grateful to the musicians whose dedication, artistry, and collaboration make the performance of this work possible.
