SERENIDAD

PROJECT

November, 2022

2 Horns, Bb Clarinet, Acoustic Guitar, and Piano Quintet

“Serenidad” is a graphic score conducted through a structure of measured durations rather than a strict meter. The piece relies heavily on performer improvisation: the score establishes a series of limitations, gestures, and guidelines, while leaving much of the musical material and its development to the performers. This open-ended approach allows each performance to become a unique interaction between the conductor and ensemble.

I conceived this piece as an opportunity to connect with an ensemble through a more relaxed and intuitive musical experience. Rather than focusing on the expectations of a traditional concert performance, “Serenidad” creates a space in which performers and listeners can simply slow down and be present with the music. The piece is ultimately a meditation on stillness and calm. In a world that often moves too quickly, it can be easy to forget to pause, breathe, and observe our lives with clarity. “Serenidad” is an invitation to slow down, embrace the present moment, and allow yourself a space for quiet reflection.
