SALAZAR TAMAYO

ABOUT ME
Luis Angel Salazar Tamayo is a Mexican composer and singer trained at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and Berklee College of Music.

MY PORTFOLIO

INNER VOID
NOVEMBER, 2026
VIDEOGAME
During a coma, you journey through the memories and traumas that shaped different chapters of your life. This original soundtrack explores the ambiguous space between memory and consciousness, capturing the anxiety, vulnerability, and confrontation that arise when facing the ghosts of childhood. I am deeply grateful to have composed the music for this remarkable project by Patricio Salazar.

THE THINK OF TIME
JULY, 2026
Performer Quartet
“To Think of Time…” is composed for four performers and draws inspiration from excerpts of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. The work responds to the selected texts through an evolving musical language, shaping an atmosphere that transforms gradually over time. Rather than illustrating the poetry, the piece reflects on its themes through texture, timbre, and the slow unfolding of musical gestures.

CULPABLE
MAY 1, 2026
FILM
A haunting story of brotherhood, loss, and redemption, Culpable follows Ángel as he struggles to come to terms with the death of his younger brother, Gabriel. Returning to the remnants of his brother's life, he is drawn into a psychological and emotional odyssey where memories, trauma, and surreal visions merge into one. As the boundaries between past and present begin to dissolve, Ángel must confront the guilt that has defined him and the love he failed to express while Gabriel was still alive. Special thanks to Director Thomas Madrid for trusting me with the music of this remarkable project. It was an honor to help bring this story to life through its soundtrack.

STAGNANT COLD
MAY 1, 2026
Orchestra
Inspired by Wallace Stevens' haiku, Stagnant Cold explores perception within an environment of near-complete stillness. The work unfolds through gradual transformations of a single musical idea, allowing timbre and orchestral texture to become the primary agents of motion. Extended instrumental techniques dissolve conventional sonorities, creating a sound world that feels at once expansive and intimate. Against this suspended landscape, subtle gestures acquire heightened significance, inviting the listener to experience time not as narrative, but as presence. Among the twenty snowy mountains the only moving thing is the eye of the black bird.—Wallace Stevens. I want to thank the Boston Conservatory Orchestra and the Maestro Vimbayi Kaziboni for the performance of this piece.

FRAGMENTOS DE MÉXICO IMAGINANDO
April 22nd, 2026
Chamber Ensemble
“Fragmentos de un Mexico Imaginado” (Fragments of an Imagined Mexico) is a work that musically expresses the diverse works of Mexican artists from different periods and styles, presented sequentially, as if the listener were floating between them. This piece is inspired by the structure and concept of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” where the music represents the individual paintings, much like the audience’s journey through an exhibition, moving from one painting to the next. The work is structured in four movements, each representing a different piece, separated by short interludes that symbolize the listener’s movement toward another work, an introduction, and a finale that mirror each other. The works are presented consecutively in the following order: 1. “The Farewell” – José Clemente Orozco 2. “Memory of Old San Blas” – Emilia Ortiz 3. “Mother and Son” – David Alfaro Siqueiros 4. “The Souls of the Mountains” – Remedios Varo.

INTROSPECTION
APRIL 15, 2026
CHAMBER ENSEMBLE
Introspection is a work for the Hinge Quartet, featuring soprano saxophone, piano, electric guitar, and percussion. The piece invites the audience to pause, listen, and turn their attention inward. Through shifting colors and expressive gestures, the music creates an atmosphere where thoughts can drift freely and moments can be experienced without judgment. It is an exploration of mindfulness, uncertainty, and the subtle beauty found in simply existing within the present.

THE SHADOW BOX
DECEMBER, 2025
FILM
Determined to live up to his father's legacy, a young boxer dedicates himself to following the path of the champion who came before him. Yet his journey reveals an important truth: success comes not from becoming someone else, but from embracing one's own strengths. Through perseverance, self-discovery, and courage, he ultimately finds his place in the ring and honors his father's memory in his own way. I am deeply grateful to Director Dominic Sbrocco for the opportunity to collaborate on this inspiring project.

EL SON DEL VIOLÍN
AUGUST, 2025
Violin and Piano
🎻 El Son del Violín — as its name suggests — is a piece inspired by traditional Mexican rhythms, particularly the Huapango dance. It was originally written for solo violin, but even then, I could already imagine a piano accompanying it — conversing with the violin’s motifs and expanding its musical story. That idea led me to create this new duet version, where violin and piano engage in a dialogue that deepens the harmonic and emotional expression of the piece. I’m incredibly grateful to collaborate with two amazing musicians and friends — Celi Di’Meo (violin) and Tzuan Chang (piano) — for the premiere of this work. Their artistry brings so much life and meaning to El Son del Violín.

MISMA SANGRE
JULY, 2025
COMIC
Haunted by years of abuse, a young man takes the life of his father in a desperate attempt to escape his suffering. But as the dust settles, he is forced to confront a chilling realization: in seeking liberation, he has become a reflection of the monster he hated most. This soundtrack explores the blurred line between justice, vengeance, and self-destruction. My sincere thanks to Patricio Salazar for trusting me with the music of this project.

CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LISTEN
March, 2025
Guitar and Live Electronics
"Close Your Eyes and Listen" was written for acoustic guitar and live interactive electronics and is dedicated to my close friend and roommate, Gabriel Tomás Garza. As both a composer and an artist working across visual media and literature, Gabriel has cultivated a deeply personal creative voice. Throughout the piece, fragments of his poetry and spoken narratives emerge within the electronics, intertwining with the guitar to create a dialogue between memory, language, and sound. Collaborating with Gabriel is always a source of inspiration. His curiosity, artistic sensitivity, and willingness to explore new ideas make every project a meaningful creative journey.

EL CANTO DE LA MONTAÑA
September, 2024
Solo Tenor Recorder and Live Electronics
El Canto de la Montaña (The Song of the Mountain) is a work for recorder and live electronics inspired by the acoustic experience of standing atop a mountain. The electronics record, process, and reintroduce fragments of the recorder's sound, generating an evolving texture that evokes the movement of wind and the natural echoes that emerge across expansive landscapes.

AGUA TURBIA
September, 2024
Alto Saxophone, French Horn, and Bassoon Trio
"Agua Turbia" (Murky Water) tells the story of a traveler searching for peace. After crossing a muddy landscape, they arrive at the river and pause to appreciate the flowing water, birdsong, and the gentle breeze. But in a moment of distraction, they lose their balance and fall back into the mud. This work is a reflection on the setbacks that accompany every personal journey. I hope listeners see themselves in the protagonist's experience and are reminded that growth is rarely without obstacles.

RECUERDOS DE UNA LAGUNA
NOVEMBER, 2024
ANIMATED FILM
Determined to live up to his father's legacy, a young boxer dedicates himself to following the path of the champion who came before him. Yet his journey reveals an important truth: success comes not from becoming someone else, but from embracing one's own strengths. Through perseverance, self-discovery, and courage, he ultimately finds his place in the ring and honors his father's memory in his own way. SUMERGIDO
APRIL 27, 2024
CLARINET AND ELECTRONICS
Beneath the surface, where light gradually dissolves into the depths, Sumergido invites listeners into a world shaped by movement, pressure, and uncertainty. Combining clarinet with live and pre-recorded electronics, the work portrays a diver caught within powerful ocean currents, drifting between moments of tranquility and turbulence. The electronics transform and extend the clarinet's voice, creating an ever-changing environment that mirrors the restless energy of the sea.

THE GENTLE GIANT
JANUARY, 2024
Wind Ensemble
"The Gentle Giant" tells the story of a peaceful giant whose true nature is hidden beneath the assumptions of those who fear what they do not understand. Through this work, I explore how ignorance can transform kindness into something perceived as threatening. I am sincerely thankful to the Boston Conservatory for this opportunity, to Vimbayi Kaziboni for his outstanding conducting, and to every member of the orchestra for bringing this story to life through their performance.

PERSECUCIÓN
OCTOBER, 2023
Violin, Cello, Bassoon, Percussion, and Piano Quintet
"Persecución" (Pursuit) delves into the unsettling emotions of fear, paranoia, and uncertainty. Through experimental textures and evolving sonorities, the music captures the psychological tension of believing you are being followed while walking alone at night. It was an exciting challenge to shape this work, and I would like to sincerely thank the outstanding musicians whose dedication and artistry brought it to life: Clara Mazo (Violin), Andres Celis (Cello), Carson Saponaro (Bassoon), Ryan Chao (Percussion), and Mauricio Campos (Piano).

UN CLARINETE INQUIETO
September, 2023
Solo Bb Clarinet
"Un Clarinete Inquieto" is a miniature for solo clarinet dedicated to my friend, Lesly Rousse. Drawing inspiration from Mexican music, jazz, and contemporary performance techniques, the work compresses a wide range of colors and gestures into a concise musical statement. Writing this piece offered me the opportunity to further explore the clarinet's technical and expressive capabilities. I am deeply grateful to Lesly for bringing this work to life with such artistry.

MELANCOLÍA
March, 2023
Solo Piano
This piece was born during the final days of my Christmas break, only a week before my return to Boston. As I packed my belongings and prepared to leave home once again, I experienced the bittersweet feeling of saying goodbye to my family while looking forward to the opportunities awaiting me. Those emotions became the foundation of this composition, weaving together nostalgia, gratitude, and optimism. I dedicate this work to my father—not only for being an extraordinary musician, but also for being a loving father whose guidance, generosity, and unwavering encouragement have been among the greatest influences in both my life and my artistic journey.

PROMETHEUS
November, 2022
Sinfonietta
"Prometheus" draws inspiration from the Greek myth of the Titan who defied the gods to bring fire to humanity. The piece reflects both the triumph and the tragedy of his sacrifice, told from humanity's perspective as an expression of gratitude toward the one whose gift came at the cost of eternal suffering. I extend my sincere thanks to conductor Vimbayi Kaziboni and the Boston Conservatory Sinfonietta for their inspiring performance of this work.

SERENIDAD
November, 2022
2 Horns, Bb Clarinet, Acoustic Guitar, and Piano Quintet
"Serenidad" is a meditation on stillness and calm. In a world that often moves too quickly, we can easily forget to pause, breathe, and view our lives with clarity. This piece is an invitation to slow down, embrace the present moment, and allow yourself a space for quiet reflection.

EL TREN SINCOPADO
September, 2022
Jazz Trio
"El Tren Sincopado" is a playful jazz composition inspired by the charm and energy of an old countryside train. Throughout the piece, syncopated rhythms recreate the clatter of the rails, while colorful clusters and bold musical gestures imitate the train's iconic whistle. Special thanks to Grig Balassanyan (piano), Enrique Perez (double bass), and Koren Berkovich (drums) for their exceptional performance and for bringing this musical journey to life.
